Recycling Initiatives & Program on Cousine Island
In 2020, we have implemented a professionally monitored recycling program to align with our sustainability and conservation efforts and goals. Our program ensures that all waste generated on Cousine Island is managed in an environmentally responsible manner, reflecting our commitment to preserving the island's natural beauty and biodiversity.
Biodegradable waste, such as food scraps and plant material, is composted on-site whenever possible. This composting process not only reduces the volume of waste but also produces nutrient-rich compost that can be used to enrich the soil, supporting the island's lush vegetation and contributing to a healthier ecosystem. By turning organic waste into a valuable resource, we close the loop on waste management and promote a more sustainable environment.
Non-biodegradable waste is meticulously separated into various recycling categories. This includes materials such as plastics, metals, and glass, which are sorted to ensure they can be effectively recycled. Once sorted, this recyclable waste is transported by boat to recycling stations on Mahé Island. Mahé Island has well-established recycling facilities capable of processing these materials and ensuring they are repurposed rather than ending up in landfills.
Our professionally monitored recycling program is a crucial part of our broader sustainability strategy. By diverting waste from landfills and reducing our environmental footprint, we are taking concrete steps towards achieving our conservation goals. The program not only minimizes the impact of waste on the island's delicate ecosystems but also serves as a model for responsible waste management in remote and ecologically sensitive areas.
Through these efforts, we aim to protect the natural habitats of the island's unique flora and fauna, ensuring that Cousine Island remains a pristine sanctuary for future generations. Our commitment to sustainability and conservation is unwavering, and we continue to seek innovative solutions to enhance our environmental stewardship.
